Computer vision syndrome, an umbrella term given to the eye problems caused by prolonged computer, tablet and cell phone use that is characterised by Eye irritation (Dry eyes, itchy eyes, red eyes) Blurred vision, and Headaches. Research shows that upto 50 % to 90% of individuals, kids and adults alike who use screens exhibit symptoms of digital eye strain like redness, irritation in the eyes, headaches, neck and backaches, blurred and double vision eventually destroying the functions of the eye.
A common cause for this syndrome is the repeated exertion on the eyes where individuals have to constantly keep looking at moving and rapidly changing visuals and images on the screen. Movement around the neck region excessively alternating between looking at the screen and to their notes on the table etc constantly applies pressure to not only the eyesight but also neck and spine leading to pain. A software engineers spends seven hours on average a day on the computer either in the office or working from home. To help alleviate digital eyestrain, follow the 20-20-20 rule; take a 20-second break to view something 20 feet away every 20 minutes.
