Dry eye syndrome, one of the most common reasons for a visit to the ophthalmologist is a chronic problem that occurs when the tears are not able to provide sustainable lubrication for the eyes. With each blink of the eyelids, tears spread across the front surface of the eye, known as the cornea keeping the surface of the eyes smooth and clear. An instability in tear production or poor quality tears increase the the risk of eye infection eventually causing damage. Usually the excessive tears in the eyes flow into small drainage ducts in the inner corners of the eyelids, which drain into the back of the nose. Dry eyes can occur when tear production and drainage is not in balance.

Dry eyes is characterised by sudden onset in burning or stinging sensation in the eyes. This discomfort is usually a result of long exposure to air conditioned environments, closed spaces like aeroplane, continues exposure to dust like riding a bike or sitting in front of the computer for few hours. One should consider a visit to the ophthalmologist for suitable treatment options if symptoms persist over a period of time particularly if their lifestyle involves excessive exposure to extreme cold/hot air or dusty environments.
